WA Plastics Bans - What does it mean for you?

The WA Government is implementing strategies to reduce the impacts of single-use plastics, including bans on problematic plastic items.

Plastics have integrated into our daily routines due to their affordability, convenience, and wide range of uses. Nevertheless, a significant number of single-use plastics end up as litter or in landfills. To mitigate the impact of single-use plastics, the WA Government is introducing measures, such as prohibiting problematic plastic items.

The Stage 2 bans are scheduled to take effect on 1 March 2024, with enforcement dates spread between 2024 and 2025 to allow businesses time for compliance.

The 1 March ban applies to:

  • disposable plastic cups for hot drinks
  • disposable plastic cup lids and seals (for hot or cold drinks)
  • disposable plastic trays for takeaway or eat-in food.

Please note the ban includes plastic linings or coatings, including those made from biodegradable or compostable polymers. Cups and trays can have plastic linings or coatings if the item has achieved Australian composting certification, however cup lids must be uncoated and plastic-free.

The ban applies to anyone who supplies prohibited items in Western Australia.

  • Retail or hospitality businesses such as restaurants, cafes, bars, hotels, takeaway food outlets, party supply stores, discount stores, supermarkets, market stalls, online stores, home delivery services, and any other retailer must not supply banned items.
  • Manufacturers, suppliers, distributors and wholesalers must not supply banned items in WA. As with all businesses, suppliers must not provide any false or misleading information about banned items.
  • Community groups, government bodies and not-for-profits, such as charities, welfare services, religious bodies, education providers, sporting groups, and fundraising events must not supply banned items. This includes items used as part of a service, for daily activities, or during events or fundraising activities.
